6.1-magnitude earthquake hits Japan

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 hit Hokkaido in Japan on Saturday afternoon, the country’s Meteorological Agency said, adding that it hit at a depth of 20 km (12 miles).
The epicentre of the earthquake was off the east coast of Hokkaido, the agency said, adding that no tsunami warning had been issued.
Meanwhile, the German Research Center for Geosciences said the quake hit at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles).

The tremors were felt at a seismic intensity level of 4 out of 7 in areas such as Kushiro City, Kushiro Town, and Shibecha Town. Meanwhile, locations, including Obihiro City, Nemuro City, and Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture on Honshu, experienced shaking at an intensity level of 3.

According to Japan’s national broadcaster NHK, the earthquake caused strong tremors across multiple regions. However, no injuries or damage to property have been reported so far.

The incident has renewed concerns about seismic risks in Japan, particularly with ongoing warnings from experts about the potential for a devastating earthquake along the Nankai Trough, which could have severe consequences.
