China warns Israeli strikes on Iran risk regional instability

China has expressed deep concern over Israel’s recent military strikes on Iran, warning that the escalation threatens to destabilise the entire Middle East and urging all parties to exercise restraint.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Beijing is “closely monitoring” developments following what it termed a “serious act of aggression” by Israel against Iranian territory.

“We are deeply concerned about the potential consequences of these attacks,” the spokesperson said, adding that “a show of aggression is not in the interest of any party involved.”

The Chinese government reiterated its long-standing stance in favour of dialogue and diplomacy over military confrontation. “China urges all sides to act with calm and restraint,” the statement read. “We emphasise the importance of safeguarding regional peace and stability and call on the international community to help prevent further escalation.”

The remarks came a day after Israel launched extensive airstrikes on Iran, reportedly killing several top Iranian military officials and two nuclear scientists. In retaliation, Iran fired a barrage of drones at Israel, which Tel Aviv claimed to have intercepted successfully.

China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a key player in Middle Eastern diplomacy, stressed its willingness to contribute to de-escalation efforts. “We are ready to play a constructive role in reducing tensions and facilitating dialogue between the concerned parties,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson added.

Beijing has traditionally maintained balanced relations with both Tehran and Tel Aviv, but has grown increasingly vocal in recent months about the need to avoid military solutions in the region. In 2023, China brokered a historic rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which had long been at odds.

In its latest response, China reaffirmed that respect for national sovereignty and international law must remain paramount. The Foreign Ministry urged all nations, especially those with influence in the region, to push for diplomatic solutions and avoid a full-scale conflict.
