Punjab Excise Department has announced a 95% reduction in registration and token fees for electric vehicles (EVs) and electric bikes.
According to the Environment Department, nearly 80% of pollution in Pakistan is caused by the transport sector. In cities like Lahore, around 38% of air pollution is attributed to petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.
Environmental experts have welcomed the government’s initiative, calling it a climate-friendly and progressive step. They believe that widespread adoption of EVs can significantly reduce harmful emissions in the long run.
Speaking to SAMAA, Additional Director General Excise & Taxation Punjab, Ahmed Saeed, stated that under the new directive, only 5% of the usual registration and token tax is being charged for electric vehicles to encourage people to shift away from traditional fuel-based cars.
Excise Department records reveal that so far in Punjab, 14,357 electric scooters, 1,461 electric cars, and 36 electric rickshaws have been registered.
