Ronaldo shocks fans by rejecting Club World Cup – Here’s why

Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed he turned down offers to participate in the Club World Cup, citing the need for proper rest and preparation ahead of a demanding season.

The 40-year-old, who recently extended his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for another two years, said the decision was made to ensure he remains in top form both for club and country.

“I had some offers to play in the World Cup but I think it didn’t make sense because I prefer to have good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long as it is the World Cup season at the end of the year,” Ronaldo said in a video shared by Al-Nassr on social media platform X.

Ronaldo’s comments come amid speculation surrounding his potential inclusion in the FIFA Club World Cup, despite Al-Nassr not qualifying. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had earlier suggested talks were ongoing about Ronaldo’s possible involvement.

However, the Portuguese captain clarified that he chose instead to focus on physical recovery and preparation, highlighting his commitment to both Al-Nassr and Portugal.

“I want to be ready not only for Al-Nassr but also for the national team. So, this is why I decided to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to anything,” he added. “And of course, to be in this club, which I love.”

Earlier this month, Ronaldo scored in the Nations League final against Spain, with the match ending 2-2 before Portugal triumphed on penalties to lift the trophy.

Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in 2022 after parting ways with Manchester United. Since then, he has become a key figure at the Riyadh-based club, netting 93 goals in 105 appearances across all competitions.

“My goal is always to win something important for Al-Nassr. And of course, I still believe in that,” he said. “This is why I renewed the two years more because I believe that I will be a champion in Saudi Arabia.”

With his tally now at 932 career goals — 794 at club level and 138 for Portugal — Ronaldo has set his sights on reaching the rare 1,000-goal milestone, a target he continues to edge closer to with every match.
