‘Sardaar Ji 3’ is year’s highest-grossing Punjabi film despite India ban

The global Punjabi-speaking community has sent a powerful message to the Indian government as Sardaar Ji 3, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, shattered box office records worldwide — despite being banned from release in India.

The romantic-comedy film, which faced backlash from right-wing groups in India over the casting of a Pakistani artist, has earned an impressive Rs420 million globally. It became the highest-grossing Punjabi film of the year and the 12th highest-grossing Punjabi film of all time, even without screening in Indian cinemas.

According to box office reports, Sardaar Ji 3 also saw a stellar performance in Pakistani cinemas, earning over Rs 70 million in its first week alone.

Ban backfires

The film was reportedly barred from release in India after producers refused to comply with demands to remove Hania Aamir from the cast. The decision sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing the Modi-led Indian government of following an extremist and divisive cultural policy.

Despite the ban, the film’s creators, including lead star Diljit Dosanjh, went ahead with the international release. The result: roaring success in countries with large Punjabi diaspora communities, including Canada, the UK, and Australia.

Indian Punjab chief minister speaks out

Indian Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also voiced strong criticism against the ban on Pakistani artists. “If there’s no objection to playing cricket with Pakistan, then why ban artists?” Mann questioned.

He also emphasized the shared cultural and linguistic heritage between Indian Punjab and Pakistan, particularly among the Sikh and Punjabi communities, urging for art to rise above politics.
