UNSC adopts Pakistan-backed resolution on peaceful resolution of conflicts

WASHINGTON: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has welcomed the approval of a United Nations resolution sponsored by Pakistan, calling it a positive step towards global peace.

Speaking on the occasion, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to implementing the UN’s Charter of Demands and emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means.

He strongly criticised India, stating that it has used water as a weapon against Pakistan. Dar noted that the current UN debate reflects the global desire for resolving conflicts peacefully and underscored Pakistan’s role as a peace-seeking nation.

Highlighting the unresolved issues of Palestine and Kashmir, Dar said their continued neglect exposes the international community’s double standards. “More than 58,000 people have been martyred in Palestine,” he regretted.

He reiterated Pakistan’s hope for a peaceful two-state solution to the Palestine issue and stressed that the Kashmir dispute remains a long-standing item on the UN Security Council’s agenda.

Peaceful settlement of such conflicts, he concluded, is essential for sustainable global peace.

UN adopts Pakistan-sponsored resolution

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted Pakistan-sponsored resolution on “Strengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes”.

The resolution was adopted during a session of the Security Council, presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar in Washington on Tuesday.

The resolution calls for enhancing efforts by all regional and sub-regional organisations and effective implementation of Security Council resolutions for peaceful settlement of disputes and to strengthen cooperation between these organizations and the United Nations.

The resolution is an important contribution to the promotion of international peace and security through the use of preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention and measures.

Member states and the United Nations have been encouraged to explore ways and means to prevent disputes from escalating, including but not limited to timely diplomatic efforts, mediation, confidence-building and facilitation of dialogue at the international, regional and sub-regional levels.

As an active member of the Security Council, Pakistan seeks to contribute to the promotion and maintenance of international peace and security, including through peaceful settlement of disputes.
