The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has prohibited the use of the name ‘Pakistan’ in the World Championship League (WCL) or any other private cricket league, following a meeting of the Board of Governors (BoG).
According to sources, the BoG reached a unanimous decision that no future league shall use the national name. The board also upheld its policy of keeping politics out of sport. In the meeting, it was decided that the name ‘Pakistan’ may not be linked to any team participating in the WCL or any similar event.
The BoG rejected the proposal to boycott the final of the WCL. Some members reportedly supported the idea of a boycott; however, former cricketer Zaheer Abbas and others advised against it, sources said.
The BoG also decided that any future participation of teams in such events shall take place only with formal approval from the board.
PCB Chairman Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi has attended the meeting via video link. Members of the board congratulated him on the successful conduct of the meeting and on the timely release of the Asia Cup schedule.
Several members reaffirmed their stance that politics must not influence sports, sources added.
