New Zealand hit by triple injury blow ahead of Australia series

The New Zealand cricket team has been dealt a major setback ahead of their home season, with Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips and Finn Allen ruled out of the upcoming Chappell-Hadley T20 series against Australia starting October 1.

Fast bowler Will O’Rourke has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back and will be sidelined for at least three months, New Zealand Cricket confirmed.

He sustained the injury during the first Test against Zimbabwe earlier this month. The 24-year-old will now undergo a strength and conditioning program, ruling him out of the series against Australia, England and the West Indies.

Head coach Rob Walter expressed sympathy, saying, “We’re really feeling for Will at the moment and wishing him a speedy recovery.”

Phillips and Allen also unavailable

Adding to the woes, Glenn Phillips has been ruled out due to a groin injury that requires rehabilitation, while Finn Allen will be out for three months following surgery on his right foot. Both were key players in New Zealand’s T20 setup and their absence leaves a significant gap in the batting order.

Walter admitted the setback was “disappointing,” given both players’ importance in the team’s recent white-ball performances.

Santner’s fitness under watch

White-ball captain Mitchell Santner has returned home after pulling out of The Hundred due to groin pain. The all-rounder recently underwent abdominal surgery and will require a month-long recovery. However, selectors are expected to include him in the squad and monitor his progress ahead of the Australia series.

Walter highlighted Santner’s value, saying, “Mitch is a world-class player and a crucial part of our T20 side from both a skills and leadership point of view.”
