KP govt to establish autonomous climate action board

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has resolved to institute an autonomous climate action board to spearhead policymaking and pragmatic measures against the escalating challenge of climate change. A legislative draft in this regard will soon be tabled before the KP Assembly.

According to the draft, the provincially constituted board will exercise complete independence and decision-making authority. It will comprise eight administrative secretaries alongside four representatives from the private sector.

The board’s mandate encompasses formulating climate policies, fostering inter-departmental coordination, advancing research, and augmenting cooperation with international institutions.

Furthermore, the draft noted that the board will not only design a new climate policy framework but will also pursue carbon credit opportunities, prepare greenhouse gas inventories, and promote a low-carbon economy.

The legal draft also recommended a mandatory board meeting every four months to meticulously review progress on climate-related initiatives and policy implementation.
