LAHORE: Pakistan’s tri-series win in Sharjah saw Salman Ali Agha and Shaheen Afridi pledge their earnings to support victims of devastating floods that have killed over 900 people.
Following Pakistan’s emphatic tri-series victory in Sharjah, T20I skipper Salman Ali Agha announced that he and fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi will donate their tournament earnings to those devastated by the latest wave of catastrophic floods across the country.
Sharing the news on X, Salman wrote: “Currently our country is going through a difficult time. Myself and Shaheen Afridi will donate tri-nation series earnings to all affected by floods back home.” He urged fellow cricketers to follow suit, adding that many lives had been destroyed and needed rebuilding.
Pakistan floods
The announcement comes as Pakistan grapples with its second major flooding disaster in three years. Since late June, more than 900 people have died, over one million residents have been displaced, and more than 1,400 villages in Punjab have been inundated, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
NDMA figures show Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recording the highest toll at 504. Buner district is the worst-hit, where landslides and floods have killed 256 people, including 23 children. Punjab has also endured its “worst ever flood”, affecting 4.1 million residents, with floodwaters now flowing downstream into Sindh.
As Sindh braces for heavy rainfall this week, more than 128,000 people have already been evacuated from low-lying areas. Authorities warn that further displacement is expected as water levels rise.
Pakistan claims in tri-series
On Sunday in Sharjah, Pakistan sealed the tri-series title with a dominant 75-run win over Afghanistan. Defending 141, Pakistan bowled out their opponents for just 66 runs. Spinner Mohammad Nawaz produced a career-best spell, taking 5/19 and including a stunning hat-trick against Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai and Ibrahim Zadran.
Shaheen Afridi set the tone with an early dismissal of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, while Nawaz later removed Karim Janat and Rashid Khan to complete his maiden five-wicket haul. Earlier, Salman Ali Agha (24 off 27) and Nawaz (25 off 21) steadied Pakistan’s innings to post 141-8.
