The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a rain alert for the upper areas of the province, warning that heavy stormy rains are expected in most districts from October 5 to 7.
Officials have cautioned that the rainfall could increase the flow of water in rivers and canals, raising concerns of flooding.
Heavy rains expected across Punjab
According to a PDMA spokesperson, the upcoming spell of intense rains is likely to hit most districts in Punjab. The rains are also expected in the upper reaches of rivers, which could lead to a surge in water levels.
The authority has urged citizens to remain cautious and follow safety advisories during the forecast period.
Punjab CM directs administration to stay alert
PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia said the alert was issued on the instructions of the chief minister of Punjab. Commissioners, deputy commissioners, and all relevant officers have been directed to stay vigilant and prepare for emergency measures.
“All deputy commissioners and other officers should be present in the field to ensure immediate response,” Kathia emphasised.
Rising risk of flooding in rivers and canals
Officials have highlighted that the anticipated downpour will likely increase the flow of water in Punjab’s rivers and canals. This may create challenges for local communities, especially in low-lying areas.
The PDMA stressed the importance of early preparedness and instructed authorities to coordinate closely to manage any possible flooding situation.
