Hamas’s acceptance of key elements in US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan has sparked a wave of international reactions, with leaders and institutions calling the move a rare opportunity to end the devastating war.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said it welcomed Hamas’s statement, including its “readiness to release all hostages.” Doha also endorsed Trump’s call for Israel to immediately halt its bombing of Gaza.
Egypt praised Hamas’s response and described Trump’s proposal as a “realistic political vision” that could bring “peace and stability” to the Middle East. Cairo urged all parties to rise “to the level of responsibility required” to end the war.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Hamas’s move “constructive and a significant step toward achieving lasting peace.” He also demanded that Israel “immediately stop all its attacks” on Gaza.
European leaders see ‘opportunity for peace’
French President Emmanuel Macron urged swift follow-up on Hamas’s commitment, saying it offered a chance to “make decisive progress towards peace.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that “peace in Gaza and the release of the hostages are within reach,” signaling Berlin’s support for Trump’s mediation.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “encouraged” by Hamas’s statement. He urged both sides to “seize the opportunity” to bring the conflict to an end.
UK, Italy, Australia and Colombia join in support
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed her “full support for President Trump’s efforts” and stressed the need for a ceasefire that would enable the immediate release of all hostages.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Hamas’s acceptance of the plan as a “significant step forward” and said Trump’s initiative had brought the region “closer to peace than ever before.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the progress but pressed Hamas to “lay down its arms and release all remaining hostages without delay.”
Colombian President Gustavo Petro took a stronger tone, calling for the “cessation of the genocide.” He said if Trump moved militarily to “stop the oppression over Palestine,” Colombia’s army would stand alongside.
Carney praises Trump’s mediation efforts
Canada has joined a growing number of nations welcoming Hamas’s agreement to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan, calling it a positive step toward resolving the conflict in Gaza.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said on X that Canada “welcomes commitments from Hamas to relinquish power and release all remaining hostages, living and deceased.” He expressed gratitude to Donald Trump for his “essential leadership” in advancing the agreement.
In his statement, Carney emphasized that Canada stands ready to assist international efforts aimed at sustaining peace and stability in the region.
“We stand ready to support the sustained, unimpeded, and large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid into and throughout Gaza,” he wrote.
Carney’s remarks come as several Western governments have voiced cautious optimism following Hamas’s acceptance of Trump’s plan, which is being viewed as a potential turning point after months of violence in Gaza.
