LAHORE: The 27th Constitutional Amendment has been challenged in the Lahore High Court, with the petitioner requesting the court to declare the it unconstitutional and null and void.
The petition was filed by a citizen, Hassan Latif, on Tuesday through Advocate Maqsit Saleem, naming the prime minister, the speaker of the National Assembly, and the Ministry of Law as respondents.
The petitioner contended that the current government has approved yet another constitutional amendment, which has already been passed by the Senate. The counsel argued that under the amendment, all powers of the Supreme Court have been transferred to a newly proposed Federal Constitutional Court, while the Chief of Defence Staff has been granted lifelong immunity.
The petition further asserts that the 27th Constitutional Amendment contradicts the true spirit of the Constitution, undermining the principle of separation of powers. The petitioner has urged the court to declare the amendment unconstitutional and strike it down.
