The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday reserved the verdict on the petition challenging the postponement of local bodies’ (LB) elections in Islamabad, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
A five-member bench of the ECP, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, heard the case.
Additional Secretary Interior Nazar Muhammad and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa appeared before the bench.
Special Secretary ECP told the bench that the polls had to be postponed because of the decision by the federal government to increase the number of union councils in the federal capital.
He informed that the election commission again announced schedule for the elections and demarcations were done. “We have now completed all arrangements,” he added.
The CEC said that now the ECP would announce a date for the polls. “Elections have already been held in three provinces, while they are going to be held in Punjab,” Raja said, adding that the election commission would give the decision, which would be binding on all.
He said postponing the elections again and again was a joke. “So far, we have shown restraint and has not summoned any official in person,” the CEC said, adding that he had already told the secretary interior to take the issue seriously.
