ChatGPT group chats launch globally — Here’s how to join

OpenAI has rolled out group chats in ChatGPT to all users worldwide, transforming the AI from a one-on-one assistant into a collaborative tool for friends, families, and colleagues.

The feature comes a week after a pilot in Japan and New Zealand.

Group chats allow up to 20 participants to engage in a single conversation alongside ChatGPT. Users can plan trips, co-write documents, settle debates, or conduct research together while ChatGPT helps summarize, compare, and generate content.

OpenAI emphasizes privacy: each user’s personal settings and memory remain private, and tagging ChatGPT prompts the AI to respond. Users can also react with emojis, and the AI can reference participants’ profile photos.

How to start group chat

To create a group chat, users simply tap the people icon and add participants directly or via a shared link. Everyone is prompted to set up a brief profile with their name, username, and photo.

If someone is added to an existing chat, OpenAI ensures a new conversation is created, leaving the original chat intact. This allows seamless collaboration without affecting prior discussions.

ChatGPT moves toward social collaboration

OpenAI envisions ChatGPT evolving into more than a personal assistant. Group chats mark a step toward turning the AI into a social platform and collaborative environment, where the model actively helps users plan, create, and make decisions together.

“Over time, ChatGPT will play a more active role in real group conversations,” OpenAI stated, highlighting its ambition to integrate the AI into multi-person workflows.
