ISPR DG calls Afghan Taliban regime threat to global security, not just Pakistan

RAWALPINDI: Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, said Afghan Taliban regime is facilitating the infiltration of terrorists, further emphasising that it has become a significant threat not only to Pakistan but to the entire world.

DG ISPR held a detailed discussion with senior journalists on various national security issues, counter-terrorism measures, border management challenges, and the changing regional dynamics.

He explained that the Afghan Taliban provided full support to militants crossing the border, and the lack of an effective administrative structure in border regions is aggravating governance issues.

He stated that these border areas are controlled by a strong political-terrorist nexus, which is further exacerbated by the actions of groups like “Khwarij”.

Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry reiterated Pakistan’s position on the Doha Agreement, demanding that the Afghan Taliban stop supporting terrorist groups. He also revealed that Afghanistan still hosted terrorist organizations like Al-Qaeda and ISIS, which receive arms and funding for use against Pakistan.

Increased Counter-Terrorism Operations

General Chaudhry highlighted the significant increase in counter-terrorism actions in Pakistan over the past year. He stated that since November 4, 2025, a total of 4,910 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) were carried out, leading to the elimination of 206 terrorists.

In 2025, a total of 67,023 IBOs were conducted across the country. The highest number of operations occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (12,857) and Balochistan (53,309). A total of 1,873 terrorists, including 136 Afghans, were killed in these operations.

Challenges in Border Management

The DG ISPR addressed the ongoing challenges related to the management of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. He pointed out the misleading propaganda being circulated against Pakistan’s security forces and clarified that the border areas are complex, with difficult terrain and long distances between border posts.

He stressed that an effective border fence requires substantial resources, including surveillance systems and frequent security posts every 2 to 5 kilometers.

Concerns Over Afghan Refugees and Border Security

On Afghan refugees, he confirmed the repatriation of large numbers of Afghan refugees, with 366,704 returning in 2024 and 971,604 expected in 2025. He also addressed the ongoing issue of smuggling, particularly diesel smuggling, which has been a significant source of funding for terrorist groups like BLA and BYC. He noted a reduction in smuggling from 20.5 million liters per day to 2.7 million liters, following the government crackdown.

Social Media Propaganda

Lt Gen Chaudhry discussed the growing influence of foreign-backed social media accounts spreading anti-Pakistan narratives. He revealed that many of these accounts operate from abroad, aiming to stir political unrest in Pakistan.

Response to Indian Military Statements

Addressing recent statements from Indian military officials, General Chaudhry dismissed the claims as propaganda aimed at easing public frustration in India. He also warned that any country supplying military equipment to the Afghan Taliban would be directly aiding terrorist groups.

The DG ISPR made it clear that Pakistan cannot accept any differentiation between good and bad terrorists, emphasizing that the country remains committed to eradicating terrorism.
