Interior secretary upholds FIA officers’ dismissed over Greece boat tragedy

The Ministry of Interior has dismissed and penalised multiple officers over negligence, corruption and professional misconduct, with several decisions linked to the 2023 Greece boat tragedy, it was reported on Monday.

According to the report, the Interior Secretary upheld earlier disciplinary rulings against FIA personnel, rejecting the appeals of six sub-inspectors and an assistant sub-inspector involved in the case.

Negligence findings related to the Greece boat tragedy led to the dismissal of a deputy director and two assistant directors stationed at Karachi Airport.

The Interior Secretary also ordered the removal of an assistant director posted at Faisalabad Airport after similar charges were proven against him.

In Multan, a deputy director faced demotion in both rank and pay for three years after allegations surfaced linking him to human smugglers.

Two senior investigators were dismissed for substandard investigative work, while an assistant database administrator was removed for negligence.

Further disciplinary measures included pay-scale reductions ranging from one to three years for four assistant directors and an inspector who were found guilty of absenteeism, negligence and poor investigation.

At Islamabad Airport, an assistant director and an inspector were formally censured for mishandling a detainee.

The Interior Secretary also rejected the appeals of three head constables and five constables, upholding their dismissal from service.

However, in a partial relief, the penalties imposed on a superintendent and sub-inspector were modified, converting their punishment of promotion stoppage into censure.

An LDC dismissed for habitual absenteeism also failed to secure relief, as his removal from service was maintained.
