Google has officially confirmed that a major user experience overhaul for its Gemini app is currently in development, alongside a native application for macOS.
The announcements come directly from Google executives, signaling a direct response to user feedback regarding the current app’s limitations compared to competitors like ChatGPT.
‘Gemini app UX 2.0’ in the works
Logan Kilpatrick, the lead product for Google AI Studio and Gemini API, confirmed on social media that the company is making a “huge investment” in what he calls Gemini App UX 2.0. This statement was made in response to user criticisms highlighting that Gemini’s current front-end interface lags behind the polished experience of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
While the current Gemini app on Android and the web is functional, users have long reported that it feels clunky and fails to easily surface the model’s advanced capabilities. A redesigned “2.0” interface aims to streamline everyday interactions, making features like file analysis and multi-modal inputs more accessible and intuitive.
Finally, a native macOS app
Perhaps the most significant news for power users is the revelation that a native Gemini app for macOS is also in development. Currently, PC and Mac users can only access Gemini through a web browser, a method that restricts deep system integration and slows down workflows.
In contrast, ChatGPT already offers native apps for both Windows and Mac, allowing for:
- Faster File Uploads: Drag-and-drop functionality works significantly better in native environments.
- System Integration: Native apps can interact more smoothly with other local applications like Notion, Terminal, or Apple Notes.
- Agentic Capabilities: As AI moves toward “agentic” workflows—where AI acts on behalf of the user—a native app is crucial for managing local files and executing background tasks efficiently.
While Kilpatrick did not provide a specific release timeline, the confirmation suggests Google is prioritizing desktop parity with OpenAI.
Mobile app for AI Studio
In a parallel development, Google AI Studio, the developer-focused platform for building with Gemini models—is also getting a mobile counterpart. Dubbed “Build Anything,” this native app for iPhone and Android is currently in the works.
Ammar Reshi, the lead product and design head for Google AI Studio, teased the project, indicating that developers will soon be able to continue their “vibe coding” sessions on the go. Although this app may still be some time away from a public launch, it underscores Google’s commitment to making its AI tools accessible across all devices, not just desktops.
Why this matters
Google’s rapid pace of updates indicates a shift in strategy. Having established powerful models, the company is now focusing on usability. By bridging the gap in user experience and platform availability, Google aims to make Gemini not just a powerful model, but a convenient daily driver for both casual users and developers.
