All 41 but three sugar mills in Punjab have started crushing of sugarcane, it was reported on Friday.
According to Cane Commissioner Punjab Amjad Hafeez, Deputy Commissioner Jhang and Faisalabad while taking action sealed three sugar mills for not paying sugarcane price to farmers.
He said crushing of 38,71,240 metric tons of sugarcane has been completed in Punjab.
Sugar mills have produced 283,935 metric tons of sugar, Amjad Hafeez said.
He said with new sugar production, the ex-mill price is Rs159 to 162per kg. Sugar is being sold in the market at Rs168 to Rs179 per kg, Amjad Hafeez claimed.
He said more than 5000 cases have been registered against sugar profiteers, 3,952 arrested and Rs58.8 million fine imposed.
