Gohar Ejaz demands review of expensive power plants

Economic Policy and Development Board Chairman Dr. Gohar Ejaz demanded that the current government review accords on expensive power plants, it was reported on Wednesday.

In a statement, Dr. Gohar Ejaz said that implementation of expensive power accords is continuing, and consumers are bearing the burden of expensive electricity.

He said that the tariff of a wind power plant is from Rs20 to Rs47, and thermal power plants produce less electricity.

The price of thermal power plant is Rs11 to Rs18 per unit, and there is a huge difference between a wind power plant and a thermal power plant.

Expensive electricity is being purchased through alternative accords and cheaper power plants producing less electricity.

Dr. Gohar Ejaz said that the government did not start negotiations with wind power and coal power plants.

He said the entire nation paid the prices of expensive electricity accounts. Due to an unnatural tariff structure, industries bearing the burden of cross-subsidy and political interests are taking priority over national interests.

He asked the government to resume negotiations on expensive power plants. Dr. Gohar Ejaz said that a new tariff structure should be issued on the basis of economic merit.

He said that many industries are being closed due to the carelessness of the present government.
