The federal government has decided to impose an additional financial burden on electricity consumers, as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has moved to recover a market operation fee through power tariffs.
According to officials, the CPPA has submitted an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), seeking approval to charge a market operation fee at the rate of Rs9 per unit. Nepra has fixed December 23 for a hearing on the request.
Sources said the proposed market operation fee is intended to be recovered as part of the electricity tariff and, if approved, would be passed on to consumers through their monthly power bills.
The fee would be applied across distribution companies based on the approved tariff structure.
Officials added that following Nepra’s approval, power distribution companies would be legally bound to pay the fee, effectively transferring the cost to end consumers.
The move comes at a time when electricity users are already grappling with rising energy prices and inflationary pressures.
