Lawlessness rising across country, says Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Friday said that lawlessness was increasing across the country, including Murree, and alleged that the government was violating the rule of law and undermining the authority of the courts.

Speaking at a press conference in Murree alongside local leaders of various political parties, Abbasi said the government claimed to respect women and the law, but its actions on the ground reflected otherwise. He alleged that the sanctity of the chadar and boundary walls had been violated in Murree, warning that the area should not be allowed to turn into a police state.

“The authority and dignity of the courts have come to an end, and court orders are not being implemented,” the former prime minister said. He questioned where citizens should seek justice if the government itself continued to break the law.

Abbasi said the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who is also a former prime minister, had the legal right to prison visits, stressing that such rights should not be denied. He accused the incumbent government of behaving like rulers rather than servants of the people.

Referring to his own tenure, Abbasi claimed that not a single illegal construction took place during his time in office. He also maintained that his government never filed false cases against political opponents.

“The people today are not being heard in the courts,” he said, adding that the prevailing situation had created deep public frustration and uncertainty about access to justice.
