Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday criticized what he described as the weakening of the Federal Sharia Court (FSC), calling it a clear violation of the constitutional commitments made to the people of Pakistan.
Addressing a gathering, Fazl said the Constitution guarantees the implementation of Islamic principles, and any move that undermines the role or authority of the Federal Sharia Court goes against those promises. He expressed concern that the recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) have yet to be presented in Parliament, despite their importance in guiding legislation in line with Islamic teachings.
He emphasized that his party has consistently stood firm on matters of freedom and religion, stating that these principles have never been compromised for political gain. “We have never bargained on freedom or religion,” he said, reaffirming his party’s commitment to safeguarding constitutional and religious values.
Fazl urged the government to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities by strengthening religious institutions and ensuring that the recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology are debated and acted upon in Parliament. He stressed that respecting these institutions is essential for maintaining public trust and upholding the spirit of the Constitution.
