Heavy fog forces closure of key motorway sections in Punjab and Sindh

Severe fog blanketed large parts of Punjab and Sindh during the night between Monday and Tuesday, significantly reducing visibility and prompting the temporary closure of several major motorway sections to ensure public safety.

According to a spokesperson for the Motorway Police, traffic was suspended on multiple routes after dense fog caused visibility to drop to dangerously low levels. The affected sections include the M3 Motorway from Jaranwala to Darkhana, the M4 Motorway stretching from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, and the M5 Motorway connecting Multan with Sukkur. These routes have been closed for all types of vehicles until weather conditions improve.

The spokesperson said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect lives and prevent accidents amid hazardous driving conditions. Dense fog was also reported in several cities along the National Highway, where motorists faced extreme difficulty due to near-zero visibility.

Authorities warned that violations of lane discipline during foggy conditions could result in serious and potentially fatal accidents. Drivers have been strongly urged to strictly adhere to traffic rules, use fog lights where necessary, reduce speed, and maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead.

The Motorway Police advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours when fog intensity is usually at its peak. Travelers have been encouraged to plan journeys during daylight hours, with officials identifying 10:00am to 6:00pm as relatively safer travel timings when visibility generally improves.

Motorists facing difficulties or requiring assistance have been advised to contact the Motorway Police helpline at 130 for real-time updates and guidance.
