Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan, widely popular in Pakistan for his viral songs, recently sparked controversy with remarks about Pakistan during the launch of a song from his upcoming film Border 2. The war-themed movie, also starring Sunny Deol and Vicky Kaushal, is set to release soon in India and depicts conflict against Pakistan.
Speaking at the event, Varun said, “While seeing posters of Border 2 and Operation Sindoor, all I can say is ‘it’s amazing’. Although we are a nation that promotes peace and love, it’s important to release films like Border 2 to show our youth that we can protect our country. We have the spirit and courage to respond. In 1971, we gifted freedom to another country; this time we will not go to the borders but rather change the border.”
His remarks quickly drew sharp criticism and trolling online. Pakistani social media users mocked his statements, referencing India’s recent setbacks in the May 2025 conflict, in which Pakistan shot down six Indian Rafale jets.
One user commented, “I think you have forgotten the reality—it’s 6-0.” Another wrote, “You only take revenge in films.” Others added, “You are simply obsessed with Pakistan,” and, “Whenever anybody will attack us, you will reply through Bollywood movies.”
The backlash highlights the growing sensitivity around cross-border portrayals in cinema and the political overtones of films like Border 2.
