The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has collected over Rs 83 billion in taxes from mobile phone device registration over the past six years, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday.
According to official figures, a total of 100 million mobile devices were blocked in a single year.
During the 2024–25 period, the PTA blocked approximately 72 million mobile devices.
These included 868,000 lost or stolen mobile phones and 27 million devices carrying duplicate or cloned IMEI numbers.
PTA data revealed that since 2019, mobile device registration has contributed more than Rs83 billion to the national exchequer.
The authority credited the implementation of the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) for significantly strengthening the mobile device management framework and effectively curbing the import of fake and substandard mobile phones.
According to the PTA, these measures have helped document the mobile market, increased government revenue, and discouraged illegal practices.
Under the Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Regulations 2021, the crackdown also contributed to the growth of local mobile phone manufacturing and reduced smuggling.
The authority further stated that by 2025, more than 95 percent of mobile phones used on Pakistani networks were locally manufactured, while 68 percent of smartphones in use across the country were also produced domestically.
