LHC moved against floating restaurants plan on Lahore canal

A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday against the construction of floating restaurants on Lahore’s canal.

Making the government of Punjab, LDA, PHA and others respondents in their petition, Dr. Ijaz Anwar and other citizens said that the canal was Lahore’s historical and cultural heritage and the initiation of commercial activities on it not only constituted a violation of environmental rules but also of the protection of the national heritage.

The petitioners further stated that there were fears that these restaurants would obstruct the smooth flow of canal water.

“These restaurants have already led to an increase in pollution in the city,” read the petition, adding that illegal structures and encroachments could spring up on the banks of the canal due to these restaurants.

The petitioners prayed to the court to declare the construction of floating restaurants on the canal null and void and also order the stoppage of construction of these restaurants until the final decision in the case was pronounced.
