In an important development in regulating philanthropic activities in Punjab, now there will be strict monitoring of the sources of funding of the organizations engaged in philanthropic work; the amount of funds they have received and the purposes for which these funds were spent.
The Punjab cabinet on Tuesday approved the setting up of a Charity Commission under the Punjab Charities Act, 2018.
The commission will comprise a chairman, a secretary and members, while it will be headed by the chairman, who will be appointed with the approval of the chief minister.
Its members will be both from the government as well as from outside the government.
The commission will be responsible for the registration, monitoring and accountability of philanthropic organizations, and it will have the power to act against registered as well as non-registered organizations.
