446 lawmakers yet to file assets, ECP issues final deadline

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a final reminder to lawmakers to submit their annual statements of assets and liabilities. Failure to comply by January 16, 2026, will result in suspension of membership.

The commission clarified that members of the Senate, National Assembly, and provincial assemblies who have not yet filed their statements must submit them on the prescribed Form B under Section 137 of the Election Act, 2017.

“The membership of lawmakers who fail to submit their statements by the deadline will be suspended from January 16,” an ECP spokesperson said.

The commission’s political finance offices at Kohsar Block will remain open until midnight on January 15 to receive the pending statements.

According to ECP records, 446 lawmakers had not submitted their asset statements by the original December 31, 2025, deadline. This includes 125 National Assembly members, 26 Senators, 159 Punjab Assembly members, 62 Sindh Assembly members, 48 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 26 from Balochistan.

Section 137(1) of the Elections Act, 2017, requires every member of the assemblies and Senate to submit a copy of their statement of assets and liabilities. The statement must also include assets and liabilities of their spouse and dependent children, reflecting the position as of June 30 of the preceding year.

The ECP has previously taken strict action against lawmakers who failed to comply. Last year, the commission suspended 139 lawmakers for not submitting their statements on time. This included two Senators from Balochistan, Muhammad Qasim (BNP) and Abdul Quddus (PPP). Other suspended lawmakers included 16 National Assembly members, 68 Punjab Assembly members, 33 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly members, 15 from Sindh Assembly, and five from Balochistan Assembly.

Those suspended were barred from attending proceedings in their respective legislatures until they submitted their statements.
