Kh Asif stresses need for power transfer to local governments

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Tuesday that the man who would say that he would make his political opponents weep was now himself weeping.

Speaking in the National Assembly during a discussion on Karachi fire incident, Khawaja Asif said that it was after the 18th Amendment that powers were transferred to the federating units, and now there was a need to transfer these powers to local bodies. “There exists a strong local government system in China,” he added.

The minister said that operation was being carried out against terrorists in KP.

He called for meaningful legislation to introduce a uniform curriculum and an empowered local government system across the country.

The Defence Minister said the Gul Plaza fire highlighted the urgent need for an effective local government system in all provinces to address public issues at the grassroots level.

Participating in the discussion, Farooq Sattar underscored Karachi’s vital role in the national economy and stressed that the city’s problems must be addressed on priority basis. He emphasized the need to ensure the safety of commercial centres in the provincial capital.

Meanwhile, two bills were laid before the House today. These included The Constitution Amendment Bill, 2026 (Article-24A) and The Institute of West Punjab, Sargodha Bill, 2026.
