Trump shrugs off Nobel, pushes harder to control Greenland

U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed talk of the Nobel Peace Prize while intensifying his campaign to assert control over Greenland, the strategically vital Arctic territory. Trump has linked his absence from the prestigious award to his persistent efforts to acquire Greenland for security and strategic purposes.

In an interview with CNN, Trump stated, “If anyone thinks Norway doesn’t control the Nobel Prize, they’re kidding. The board exists, but Norway ultimately controls it. I don’t care what Norway says.”

The dispute escalated after Trump sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, noting that, since Norway did not award him the Nobel Prize for allegedly stopping eight wars, he now prioritizes what he believes is best for the United States, while peace “will always remain important.”

The controversy was further fueled by Venezuelan opposition leader María Machado’s symbolic attempt to gift Trump the Nobel Peace Prize, prompting a response from the Nobel Committee emphasizing that the awards cannot be transferred or reassigned.

Meanwhile, Trump has continued applying pressure on European countries, including threats of tariffs, as part of his strategy to strengthen U.S. influence over Greenland.

Earlier, The Norwegian Nobel Committee has issued a formal clarification on the status of the Nobel Peace Prize. This comes after Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado symbolically presented her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Donald Trump during a meeting in Washington.

President Trump later publicly acknowledged receiving the medal. He kept it with him, which sparked widespread debate about whether Nobel Prizes can be transferred or shared.

The Nobel Committee emphasized that Nobel Prizes are personal honors. They cannot be redistributed, transferred, or revoked. The Peace Prize is awarded only to those recognized by the official committee. No individual or laureate has the authority to hand it over to someone else.
