Lahore tops global pollution rankings, air quality declared hazardous

LAHORE: Lahore has once again been named the most polluted city in the world, with its air quality classified as “hazardous,” according to the air monitoring platform IQAir.

Air pollution has become a growing public health and environmental crisis in Pakistan over the past few years, with Lahore being particularly affected during the winter months. Experts attribute the heavy smog to industrial emissions, vehicular pollution, stubble burning, and stagnant air conditions.

On Wednesday morning, Lahore recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 452, placing it at the top of the global pollution list. Karachi, by comparison, ranked ninth with an AQI of 179. A day earlier, Lahore’s AQI had soared to 507, well into the hazardous category, while Karachi ranked sixth with an AQI of 178.

IQAir issued a public health alert advising residents to limit outdoor activities, keep windows closed, wear masks when outside, and use air purifiers indoors, highlighting the serious health risks posed, especially to children and the elderly.

Punjab authorities have implemented measures to reduce smog, including water sprinkling and efforts to control stubble burning. Despite claims of some improvement, the city continues to face dangerously high pollution levels, affecting daily life and public health.
