Allama Raja Nasir Abbas slams arrest of Imaan Mazari, Hadi Ali Chattha

Allama Raja Nasir Abbas has strongly condemned the arrest of human rights activists Imaan Mazari and Advocate Hadi Ali Chattha, calling it a serious violation of due process and judicial norms.

In a statement, he said the detention of the activists while they were on their way to attend a court hearing reflects an alarming pattern of state overreach and procedural irregularities. He warned that such actions undermine the constitutional right to a fair trial and contradict Pakistan’s legal framework as well as its international human rights commitments.

Allama Raja Nasir Abbas stated that arbitrary arrests expose deep institutional weaknesses and risk pushing the justice system toward a breakdown. He cautioned that continued disregard for legal safeguards would further erode public trust in the rule of law.

He demanded immediate compliance with legal procedures, urging authorities to present Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha before a court for bail and allow them to defend themselves freely in their ongoing cases.

Condemning what he described as the silencing of dissent, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas stressed that targeting human rights defenders damages democratic values and weakens the justice system.

Earlier, The couple is also involved in a separate case concerning controversial social media posts. The Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka had summoned them to court for repeated absences in hearings. The case, registered by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) under sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, alleges that the couple attempted to incite divisions on linguistic grounds through online posts. Mazari and Chattha were indicted in this case on October 30, 2025.
