Maulana Fazlur Rehman opposes under-18 legislation in Parliament

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has strongly opposed the law allowing individuals under the age of 18 to be governed by new legislation. He called the law un-Islamic and said it goes against religious principles.

Speaking during a joint session of Parliament, Maulana Fazlur Rehman told the Speaker that he sensed pressure influencing decisions in the House. The Speaker responded by saying that the chair is a position that pleases neither the government nor the opposition.

The JUI-F leader suggested that the proposed legislation should have been referred to the Council of Islamic Ideology for review. He stated clearly that he would not follow the law. He even said he would continue to perform marriages for individuals under 18, defying the new rules.

“I am recording my strong protest in the House,” he said. “We will not allow such laws to be implemented in the country. I strongly oppose the mindset that created this legislation. This kind of politics is temporary and superficial, and it is not acceptable.”

He also raised questions about the Peace Board, asking why officials attended meetings if changes had been made to its agenda points.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticized US President Donald Trump, saying he strengthened Israel’s aggressive actions and issued threats against Hamas. He warned that Israel’s military actions could have serious regional consequences.

He added that the United States had destroyed Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya, leaving those countries in chaos. He cautioned that Israel, after attacking Iran, could threaten areas near the Taftan border.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman also recalled a statement by Israel’s first president, who had said that their state’s foundation aimed at the elimination of a new Islamic state. He warned that forums built on threats and intimidation could escalate tensions.

On domestic issues, he criticized Pakistan’s economic situation. “Economic growth is happening everywhere, but Pakistan is sinking,” he said. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister, saying the Parliament and Cabinet were not consulted before important decisions were taken.
