The Pakistan Navy has started its Sea Guards 2026 exercises in Karachi, aimed at improving maritime security, reducing marine pollution, and supporting the country’s fishing industry. The drills will continue until February 9 and bring together major government bodies and private organisations linked to the maritime sector.
The Vice Admiral Faisal Amin attended the opening ceremony as chief guest. The exercises include both sea-based operations and discussion sessions designed to identify key challenges facing Pakistan’s marine environment and strengthen cooperation among relevant institutions. The initiative is being conducted under the supervision of the Pakistan Navy.
Addressing the ceremony, Vice Admiral Faisal Amin said trust in the Joint Maritime Information and Coordination Centre has grown among public and private stakeholders. He added that this year’s theme, “Safe Seas, Prosperous Pakistan,” reflects the Navy’s commitment to protecting maritime resources while supporting economic growth.
Highlighting the importance of the fishing sector, the Vice Admiral said it has the potential to earn billions of dollars each year if properly developed. He noted that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs had made meaningful progress over the past year but warned that pollution in Pakistan’s seas is increasing rapidly. He said marine conditions were much better 25 years ago and stressed the urgent need for action.
He also revealed that two projects to control marine pollution are currently underway in collaboration with the Sindh government. In addition, a Vessel Monitoring System for fishing boats is close to completion, which will help improve safety and regulation at sea.
Vice Admiral Faisal Amin emphasised the need to enhance fishermen’s skills and awareness, adding that environmental protection drills are also part of the Sea Guards programme. He said the initiative has already strengthened coordination among maritime institutions and expressed confidence that Sea Guards 2026 would further support efforts to protect the marine environment and strengthen Pakistan’s maritime economy.
