National Assembly passes multiple bills despite quorum concerns

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly continued its legislative business on Wednesday despite questions over quorum, with Speaker Ayaz Sadiq dismissing calls for repeated quorum verification and overseeing the passage of several key bills.

During the session, some lawmakers raised the issue of quorum, prompting the Speaker to respond: “Where is it written that quorum has to be indicated repeatedly?” Undeterred, the Assembly proceeded with its agenda.

Among the bills approved was the Pakistani Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2025, which passed with a majority vote, signaling continued efforts to update and reform citizenship laws. The Cannabis Management and Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill 2026 also secured majority support, marking a step forward in regulating cannabis-related activities in the country.

The House further approved the Prevention of Misuse of the Name and Symbols of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2026, aimed at strengthening protections against unauthorized use of national symbols. In addition, the National Archives (Amendment) Bill 2026 was passed, reflecting ongoing efforts to modernize and safeguard the country’s archival resources.

Lawmakers also gave majority approval to the Naya Pakistan Housing and Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2026, supporting the government’s housing initiatives. The Islamabad Senior Citizens (Amendment) Bill 2025 was also passed, although a proposed amendment by Aliya Kamran was rejected by the majority.

The session concluded with the Speaker adjourning proceedings until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, allowing lawmakers to resume deliberations on pending matters.
