Pakistan, Philippines agree to boost trade, investment cooperation

Pakistan and Philippines held the second session of their Joint Economic Commission in Manila on Friday, where both sides discussed new ways to strengthen trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting was jointly chaired by Pakistan’s Secretary of Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim and the Philippines’ Undersecretary for International Trade Allan B Gepty. Officials reviewed ongoing cooperation and explored opportunities to increase business partnerships, including organising trade exhibitions and launching a dedicated business forum to connect investors from both countries.

Both sides also discussed updating the bilateral Double Taxation Agreement to bring it in line with modern global standards. They stressed the importance of involving the private sector and supported reviving the Pakistan–Philippines Joint Business Council to encourage more business activity.

Pakistan proposed signing a memorandum of understanding between the investment promotion agencies of the two countries and suggested forming a joint working group focused on investment cooperation. Discussions also highlighted export opportunities in agricultural products and halal-certified goods, along with possible collaboration in seed development and irrigation projects.

Officials emphasised the need for an easier and more predictable visa system to support business travel. Cooperation in the energy and minerals sectors was also discussed, particularly in exploration activities and sharing mining technology.

The meeting was attended by Pakistan’s Ambassador to the Philippines Dr Asma Rabbani and the Philippine Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Emmanuel Fernandez, along with senior representatives from both governments, marking another step toward stronger economic ties between the two nations.
