Traffic movement in Karachi began returning to normal on Monday after authorities removed barriers from several major roads that had been sealed due to the tense situation in the city.
According to traffic police, Shara-e-Faisal has been reopened for traffic near the FTC area after containers and other obstacles were cleared. Earlier, the stretch from FTC to the Jinnah Hospital turn had been blocked, causing significant disruption for commuters. Officials confirmed that traffic at Numaish Chowrangi is now flowing normally.
However, several important routes remain closed. The bridge connecting PIDC Chowk to MT Khan Road has been shut down with containers placed to block access. Authorities have also sealed parts of MT Khan Road near Sultanabad. In addition, the road from Boat Basin to Mai Kolachi Bypass has been closed, creating difficulties for motorists in the area. Traffic police stated that routes from MT Khan Road to PIDC Road and from Mai Kolachi Road to the Railway Gate are still inaccessible.
Meanwhile, Karachi University announced closure for the day, and all scheduled examinations have been postponed due to the security situation.
The unrest follows widespread protests triggered by the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Demonstrations were held across the country, including in Karachi, Islamabad, and Skardu. In Karachi, protesters gathered outside the US Consulate, where the situation escalated into violence.
According to reports, angry demonstrators stormed the consulate building, damaged property, and set parts of it on fire. During the chaos, a security guard opened fire, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people and leaving many others injured. Authorities are continuing investigations as tensions remain high in parts of the city.
