Keeping track of President Donald Trump’s statements on the war with Iran has become increasingly difficult as his position continues to shift from one moment to the next.
Since ordering early-morning strikes on Saturday that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Trump has launched an intense media campaign marked by changing goals and conflicting explanations.
On Sunday morning, just a day after the attacks, Trump said Iran’s new leadership wanted to engage with him directly and that he intended to talk with them. Hours later, he reversed course, arguing that the United States should pursue full regime change and help Iranians dismantle their ruling system.
By Monday, Trump claimed that every potential successor to Khamenei identified by his administration had already been killed in the strikes. He said the operation had eliminated nearly all viable leadership options, leaving Iran without any of the figures Washington had anticipated.
Later that day, he described the military campaign as highly effective and said US forces were inflicting heavy damage. He suggested the conflict would not last long, estimating a four-week timeline and adding that operations were moving faster than expected.
Trump also expressed surprise at Iran’s retaliatory strikes against several Arab countries in the region, calling those attacks an unexpected development.
When asked about Iran’s future leadership, he acknowledged uncertainty, saying no clear successor had emerged and suggesting the country might end up with someone more capable than past rulers.
That evening, speaking at the White House, Trump defended his decision to launch the strikes, calling them the final opportunity to stop Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme. This explanation clashed with earlier remarks in which he admitted Iran had previously offered significant concessions that, under different circumstances, he might have accepted.
He also revealed that a reported plot against his life in 2024 influenced his thinking, saying he acted first to prevent further threats.
Together, Trump’s remarks paint a picture of an administration still defining its objectives, even as the region moves deeper into conflict.
