Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Noor Alam Khan has resigned from his position as chief whip of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F), it was reported on Thursday.
Sources said the lawmaker submitted his resignation to the speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, citing internal differences within the party as the main reason behind his decision.
Noor Alam Khan is currently serving as a member of the National Assembly after being elected in the February 2024 general elections. He had earlier served as a member of parliament from 2018 to 2023 and previously from 2008 to 2013.
Over the course of his political career, Noor Alam Khan has been associated with multiple political parties. He remained a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from 2008 to 2018 before joining the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2018. He later parted ways with PTI and joined JUI-F in 2023.
In 2022, he emerged as one of the 14 dissident PTI lawmakers who were issued show-cause notices by the party leadership after aligning with the opposition ahead of the no-confidence motion against former prime minister Imran Khan.
The dissenting lawmakers had stayed at Sindh House in Islamabad during the political crisis, which led to allegations of horse-trading by the PTI leadership during the efforts to remove Imran Khan from office.
Shortly after breaking ranks with PTI in 2022, Noor Alam Khan was elected chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Pakistan, one of the most powerful parliamentary oversight bodies.
Known as one of the wealthiest parliamentarians in the country, Noor Alam Khan was in 2012 declared the richest MNA. At the time, his declared assets exceeded Rs32 billion, which was roughly equivalent to about $342 million then. His wealth included approximately 200 acres of prime land in Peshawar valued at about Rs 160 million per acre, gold ornaments worth Rs 11.6 million, two vehicles and a residential property.
