Senior UK officials have indicated a willingness to take strong defensive measures against Iranian missile threats following recent attacks on British military assets in the region.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch stated that she would support Royal Air Force jets targeting Iranian missile launch sites if necessary. Speaking about the recent strikes on a British air base in Cyprus, she criticized the government’s response, claiming that current defenses are insufficient to protect personnel stationed on the island. She highlighted the delay in deploying HMS Dragon, which was promised to strengthen air defense capabilities in Cyprus.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy confirmed that preemptive strikes against Iranian missile sites would be legally justified if used to defend British forces or citizens. He emphasized that the UK has already pre-deployed Typhoon and F-35 jets to the region and coordinated with allied nations including France and Germany to ensure the security of personnel in Cyprus.
The heightened alert follows reports of missiles launched from Iran toward Israel, which prompted the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to activate defensive systems to intercept incoming threats. Emergency services in Israel reported no casualties so far, but citizens in affected areas were advised to remain in protective shelters.
In London, four individuals were arrested in connection with a counter-terrorism investigation linked to Iran. The Metropolitan Police said the suspects, including one Iranian and three dual British-Iranian nationals, were detained on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service. The operation included searches at multiple locations in Watford, Barnet, and Harrow, targeting suspected surveillance of sites and individuals connected to Jewish communities.
