Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for an immediate halt to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, following deadly attacks that reportedly caused heavy civilian casualties. According to the Kremlin, Putin expressed his condolences to Iranian leaders over the loss of lives during what he described as armed aggression involving Israel and the United States.
During a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday, Putin conveyed his sympathy over the deaths of several senior Iranian figures and civilians. Among those mentioned was Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with members of his family and a number of Iranian political and military officials who were reportedly killed during the attacks.
The Kremlin said Putin reiterated Russia’s firm position that hostilities must stop immediately. He stressed that the use of force should not be a solution to disputes in the Middle East and called for a quick return to diplomatic dialogue to resolve tensions related to Iran and the wider region.
Putin also noted that he has been in regular contact with leaders of countries belonging to the Gulf Cooperation Council as the situation continues to develop.
During the call, President Pezeshkian thanked Russia for showing solidarity with the Iranian people. He said the support was important as Iran faces challenges while defending its sovereignty and independence. The Iranian president also briefed Putin on the latest developments during the most recent phase of the conflict.
