MQM-P criticises petrol price hike, says government did not consult allies

Leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement – Pakistan (MQM-P) on Monday criticised the recent increase in petroleum prices, saying the government took the decision without consulting its coalition partners.

Addressing a press conference, senior MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar said the sharp increase in fuel prices had placed an additional burden on the public.

“The government has increased the prices of petroleum products without consulting its allies,” he said, adding that the recent hike was far greater than earlier adjustments.

Sattar said that fuel prices had been increased by Rs8 a few days ago and were now raised by Rs55, describing the move as a severe blow to the public already struggling with inflation.

He warned that further price hikes could intensify economic hardship and lead to an increase in social problems, including street crime. He also predicted that people might stage protests after Eid al-Fitr if inflationary pressures continued.

Criticising taxation policies, Sattar said the burden of taxes should not fall on ordinary citizens and farmers, urging the government to impose greater responsibility on affluent segments of society instead.

He also called on the government to reduce its own petrol quotas and expenditures to demonstrate austerity.

Sattar said MQM-P had maintained its principles even while being part of the government and described his party as a “responsible ally” warning the authorities about the public’s growing concerns over rising fuel prices.
