Massive landslides cut off Gilgit-Baltistan road, hundreds stranded

Heavy rainfall and landslides have cut off road access to Gilgit-Baltistan, disrupting travel along the crucial Karakoram Highway and isolating the region from other parts of Pakistan. Officials reported multiple sections of the highway in Upper Kohistan remain blocked, halting both passenger and cargo traffic.

Authorities confirmed that hundreds of travelers and cargo vehicles are stranded as landslide debris and waterlogged roads prevent movement. The blockage has caused major disruptions in daily travel and logistics, affecting local residents, traders, and tourists heading to northern areas.

Rescue and repair teams have been deployed immediately to clear debris and restore road connectivity. District officials said heavy machinery and emergency personnel are working around the clock to remove rocks, mud, and damaged road sections while prioritizing safety.

So far, 60 passengers stranded by the landslide have been safely moved to temporary shelters, where authorities are providing basic necessities and support. Officials emphasized that these shelters will remain available until roads are fully cleared and travel resumes safely.

The situation has raised concerns over accessibility to remote areas during heavy monsoon or pre-monsoon rains, highlighting the vulnerability of northern Pakistan’s mountainous transport routes. Authorities are monitoring weather forecasts closely to prevent further emergencies in the region.

Officials urged travelers to avoid non-essential travel to Gilgit-Baltistan until road conditions improve. They also requested local residents and transport operators to remain patient as rescue and repair operations continue under challenging terrain and weather conditions.
