Khawaja Asif rejects Afghan Taliban’s claim about attack on hospital

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Tuesday strongly rejected allegations regarding the targeting of a hospital under the Afghan Taliban regime, terming such claims as baseless propaganda.

In a hard-hitting statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, the defence minister said the accusations were coming from elements with a history of attacking places of worship. “This claim is coming from those who attack mosques and martyr worshippers,” he remarked, adding that such groups have also targeted innocent civilians, including markets and schools.

Criticising the conduct of the Afghan Taliban, Khawaja Asif alleged that innocent lives, including children, have been lost due to their actions. He claimed that illicit activities such as drug smuggling serve as a source of income for the group.

The minister expressed concern over what he described as hostile actions against Pakistan by those who had previously been provided refuge. “The beneficiaries are now attacking the state that sheltered them for decades,” he said.

Highlighting Pakistan’s long-standing role, Khawaja Asif stated that the country had hosted multiple generations of Afghans and even endured conflict with a global superpower during that period. However, he criticised the Afghan Taliban for allegedly failing to honour commitments and making financial demands to fulfil agreements.

Reflecting on the past, the defence minister acknowledged that Pakistan had made several policy mistakes over its 78-year history. He described the extent of hospitality extended in this context as one of the most significant missteps, concluding his remarks with a prayer seeking forgiveness.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing narratives surrounding regional security and cross-border relations, with officials reiterating the need for accountability and clarity in addressing such allegations.
