Saudi Arabia may activate defense pact with Pakistan

Saudi political analyst Salman Al-Ansari has stated that Riyadh would invoke its bilateral defense agreement with Pakistan if the Kingdom becomes involved in a war with Iran. He described the arrangement as effectively providing a “nuclear umbrella” over Saudi Arabia.

In an interview with Canada’s CBC News, Al-Ansari emphasized that the Kingdom remains restrained for now but is prepared to act decisively. He added that in the event Saudi Arabia enters the conflict with full force, Iran would be the primary loser due to Pakistan’s support under the existing defense pact.

The analyst also addressed Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities, stating, “Absolutely, we can say it literally that there is a nuclear umbrella over Saudi Arabia,” confirming that the alliance carries a strategic deterrence dimension.

Al-Ansari’s remarks highlight the long-standing Saudi-Pakistan defense partnership. This collaboration has historically included joint military training, exercises, and mutual support agreements. Analysts note that his comments signal Riyadh’s readiness to rely on Islamabad in a potential Saudi-Iran confrontation.

Observers say the statements reflect not just Al-Ansari’s perspective but also align with official Saudi policy. The comments have already sparked debate on social media platforms regarding the implications for Pakistan’s security priorities, regional stability, and the nature of the alliance.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and coincide with recent high-level meetings between defense officials of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The statement also reinforces the significance of the Saudi-Pakistan Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement, signed in 2025, as a framework for mutual military support.
