Pakistan reopens Torkham border crossing for return of Afghans

Pakistan has once again opened the Torkham border crossing in order to facilitate the return of the Afghans to their homeland, it was reported on Tuesday.

At a flag meeting held at Torkham border on Monday, the Afghan officials had assured their Pakistani counterparts there would be no cross-border firing from Afghanistan.

Following that assurance, Pakistan decided to open the border crossing.

The crossing had been closed in the wake of military confrontation between the two countries.

The crossing had briefly reopened last Thursday after about 20 days of closure, but it was shut again within hours after a Pakistani soldier was wounded in border clashes between the Taliban and Pakistani troops.

The latest reopening follows several days of talks between the Taliban and Pakistani officials.

Torkham is one of the most important transit points between the two countries, serving as a key route for both trade and travel.

It has been largely closed for more than four months following escalating border tensions and clashes.
