Pakistan and Romania signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday to strengthen maritime connectivity between Karachi Port and the Port of Constanța, Radio Pakistan reported.
Karachi Port Trust Chairman Rear Admiral (retd) Shahid Ahmed and Port of Constanța General Manager Mihai Teodorescu signed the agreement during a virtual ceremony. Romanian Ambassador to Pakistan Dan Stoenescu, officials from both countries’ foreign and transport ministries, and members of the Pakistan-Romania Business Council also attended.
The MoU aims to enhance trade flows between South Asia and Europe by linking the two ports more closely. It supports Pakistan’s efforts to expand its maritime sector and blue economy, while reinforcing Romania’s role as a gateway to the European Union.
Ambassador Stoenescu said Romania seeks to expand exports to Pakistan and strengthen its economic presence in Asia. He described the partnership as a framework for sustainable cooperation.
The Karachi Port Trust called the agreement “historic,” noting that it covers port operations, engineering, technology, finance, maritime education, and information exchange. Both sides emphasized the strategic importance of Karachi and Constanța as regional gateways.
