Pakistan cricket is once again in the spotlight after Rumman Raees offered a bold yet “friendly” suggestion to star batter Babar Azam—consider stepping away from T20 internationals.
Speaking during a recent podcast alongside Fawad Alam, Raees made it clear that his comments came from a place of respect, not criticism. He acknowledged Babar’s undeniable class but hinted that the shortest format may no longer be bringing out his best.
“There’s no question about Babar’s talent,” Raees said. “But sometimes, stepping back from one format can help you regain focus and dominate others.”
The suggestion comes at a time when Babar’s T20 performances have been under intense scrutiny. Once considered one of the most consistent batters in the format, his recent outings have failed to meet expectations. His struggles were especially evident during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, where he scored just 91 runs in six matches, averaging 22.75.
Raees pointed out that T20 cricket, with its fast pace and high pressure, can sometimes negatively impact a player’s overall rhythm. According to him, a dip in one format can spill over into others—something Pakistan can’t afford with a player of Babar’s caliber.
Interestingly, Babar had already faced a challenging phase, including being sidelined from Pakistan’s T20I plans in 2024 and missing key tournaments like the Asia Cup. Although he made a comeback, questions around his role in the format persist.
For fans, this debate sparks curiosity: Is it time for Babar to reinvent himself by focusing on Tests and ODIs, or can he silence critics with a T20 resurgence?
One thing is certain—when a player of Babar Azam’s stature is involved, every suggestion becomes a headline, and every performance, a story waiting to unfold.
