Punjab introduces free legal aid for victims of land grabbing

The Punjab government has decided to provide free legal assistance to victims of land grabbing in property-related cases, expanding legal protection for affected citizens across the province.

The Punjab Legal Aid (Amendment) Ordinance 2026 was presented in the Punjab Assembly, introducing changes to the Punjab Legal Aid Act 2018. Under the new amendments, individuals who file complaints under the Protection of Ownership Rights Act 2025 will be entitled to a free lawyer.

According to the revised law, people who have been forcibly evicted from their immovable property will now receive free legal representation before tribunals. Previously, this right was limited mainly to victims involved in domestic property disputes.

The ordinance also states that individuals who have been dispossessed or deprived of their property will be provided legal support through the Legal Aid Agency to ensure due process and equal access to justice. Officials say the amendments are necessary to guarantee fair treatment for all citizens, especially those affected by powerful land mafias.

The Governor of Punjab approved the ordinance on March 31, 2026. It has now been referred to the relevant committee, which is expected to present its report within two months. After committee approval and passage by the assembly, the ordinance will formally become law.
